Vegetable Gardening in the Sierra Nevada Mountains

The Sierra Nevada mountains are in Eastern California with a small extension into Nevada near Lake Tahoe. They rise sharply from the arid regions to the East and slope gently toward the California Central Valley to the West. Vegetation includes chaparral and oak woodlands at lower elevations on the West side and coniferous forests at higher elevations to the East. Large areas are above timberline. Giant Sequoias, the most massive trees on earth, occur in some areas. The Sierra Nevadas have mild to hot, dry summers and cool to cold wet winters. Larger towns include Susanville, Quincy, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, Mammoth Lakes, Kernville, and Lake Isabella.
